“We’re in the people business.” True Light Christian Ministries marking 25th anniversary
CANTON – The Rev. Gary Martin’s commence in Canton was a rocky a person in 1994.
Just two years right after starting to be the senior pastor at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Martin resigned.
“There were being discipline difficulties,” he explained. “You can find no way in the world you can operate a church without the need of self-control. If I couldn’t do ministry in the way I was predicted to, I realized I needed leave. I failed to want to break up the church. That was never ever my intention, nor my dream.”

Martin viewed as leaving the condition but instead launched his individual nondenominational church in 1997 with 19 constitution customers. The new congregation achieved in a member’s home before renting place from a Seventh Working day Adventist Church, then creating its own facility in 2003.
Next weekend, the founding pastor of True Light Christian Ministries at 3719 Lesh St. NE will direct a 25th anniversary celebration with a gala on June 9 at the Doubletree Lodge. The celebration will culminate with a home finance loan-burning ceremony and two specific worship services on June 12 at the church.
The Rev. Clevon Dukes of Farrell Pa., will converse at 10 a.m., adopted by Bishop Carl E. Jones of Greensburg, Pa., at 3 p.m.
“It really is unusual for a congregation to break ground, build their own facility and pay it off,” Martin stated. “So for that to happen in Canton, and significantly a minority congregation, is special.”
Martin has been in ministry for 40 yrs, 30 of them in Canton. Though he was elevated Baptist, he resolved to get Correct Gentle in diverse path.
“Real Gentle is a pretty specific worship location,” he explained. “We’re nondenominational. And a person of the good reasons was due to the fact we needed to be ready to access out to individuals of numerous denominations. There is not just one, singular team simply because I believe that the kingdom is larger than that.”
Instructing, not just preaching
The Flint, Mich., native is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He acquired a master’s in theology the American Baptist Seminary and a doctorate in divinity from Vanderbilt University.
Martin stated teaching is a central ingredient of his ministry at Accurate Gentle. In addition to pastoring, he has been an adjunct professor at Malone College and Walsh College, and lately wrote his initially e-book, “Permit Me See Your Face: The Journey to Answered Prayer.”
He has been a longtime contributor to the Nationwide Baptist Convention’s Nationwide Baptist Publishing Board.
“I believe you mature a church not from the outside the house in, but from the inside of out,” he said. “Bible courses are critical. You cannot get married right here unless of course you go by way of premarital counseling. We consider God has honored all of that.”
Martin also credits members’ faithfulness, noting that they really don’t rely on fundraisers. The church, he reported, is largely financed by way of tithes and choices. For a time, they rented room to a messianic Jewish congregation.
“A person of the good reasons we did that is we desired to be definitely open up to any group of persons,” he stated.
Accurate Light also locations emphasis on outreach, which has included ministering to boys in the Indian River juvenile prison in Massillon, giveaways and family group functions.
“It was practically like Thanksgiving, the way they (associates) fed them,” Martin claimed. “You know, one of the factors we did not want to do was go away the inner town since all people appears to be to build in the suburb when they want to build a new facility. We consider every person desires to to be ministered to. This was a good chance for us to minister to people. We are in the individuals business.”
Executing matters the ideal way
At a time when church buildings are struggling to hold their doorways open up, Correct Light has thrived. At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin claimed, they hosted “drive-in” services in the parking lot and also carried out expert services on line, which was a massive results.
The church has about 100 associates.
“I consider it can be due to the fact we did points the appropriate way,” Martin explained. “Every thing we do has to slide below an umbrella. I contact it mentoring persons according to Christ’s teachings. When I initially came here, I came to see the impact of mentoring individuals in accordance to Christ’s teachings, so just about anything we did experienced to drop under that umbrella. And if you couldn’t justify it by Christ, you shouldn’t do it.”
Martin also cites powerful assistance from members who hold strategic positions in the community. Part of up coming week’s festivities will include a recognition of constitution members. The kitchen area will be named in honor of two of them, Maybelle Davenport and Helen Dunnivant.
While women tend to be the the vast majority in lots of churches, half of Legitimate Light’s customers are adult men.
“And strong males,” Martin explained. “We stimulate them to be the priests in their properties. I have to test to direct by instance. Sermons aren’t read, they’re found. If you exhibit folks what that seems like, people today start to model it.”
Martin and his wife, Debra, CEO and executive director of the Pregnancy & Parenting Center, have four grownup small children.

“I advised the church that I would never out-stay my means to be efficient,” he explained. “I’m not a single of all those men and women who retains on, just to maintain on. I would relatively leave earlier than later on.”
